Adequate meal/ Balanced Diet

Behavioural Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Define adequate meal/ balanced diet.
  2. Identify the components of an adequate meal/ balanced diet. An adequate diet(formally known as a balanced diet) is a meal which contains all classes of food in the right proportions. An adequate or balanced diet must contain nutrients from each of the main classes of food. I.e It must contain all the food types for body building, body protection, and energy – giving nutrients.
    Any meal that does not contain all the types of food is said to be an inadequate (or unbalanced ) diet.
    Food deficiency results into meal nutrition which affect the body defence. For example, meal lacking protein result in kwashiorkor. Too much carbohydrate and Fats in a diet, results in obesity. COMPONENTS OF BALANCED DIET.
    A balanced diet is a meal that contains nutrients from each of the main classes of food, in the right proportions. Therefore, the components of a balanced diet are:-

  4. Proteins
  5. Fats and oils
  6. Vitamins
  7. Mineral Salts
  8. Water
