INTRODUCTION
Batik originated from Indonesia and is derived from the word “tik’’,meaning ‘’ a little bit”or to dot’. This refers to the tiny bits of hot melted wax used in the design to resist dye. Indonesia is made of 13600 islands. The main islands include java, Sumatra and sulawesi. More than half of Indonesians population of 238million live in just one island ,which is java.Batik textile dyeing is a popular craft originated from java in Indonesia and Indonesians are famous for making colorful fabrics called batik.
In Nigeria, it is still much in practice in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the process of production involves the use of wax, applied on fabrics with a traditional tool called TJANTING ,pattern or brush and the cloth is then dipped in a dye solution. The wax resists the dye , which fills the areas that are not waxed. This is a similar process to tie and dye. After dyeing the wax is removed from the cloth, using hot water and iron. Batik is historically the most expressive and subtle of the resist methods. The ever widening range of techniques available offers the students the opportunity to explore a unique process in a flexible and exciting way.
