CIVIC EDUCATION NOTE FOR WEEK 10
HOW TO PROMOTE NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS, INTEGRITY AND UNITY.
1.IMPLEMENTATION OF RULE OF LAW: Rule of law means equality of all persons before the law. Nobody, no matter his position is above the law.
2. CREATION OF JOBS: When most Nigerians that want to work are gainfully employed, they will be happy. They will have much respect for authority, national symbols and ethics.
3. STRICT IMPLEMENTATION OF FEDERAL CHARACTER: When the principle of federal character is observed and rigidly implemented, every Nigerian will have a sense of belonging. Federal character or quota system is that in which the local, state and federal governments, government agencies and organizations must ensure that positions and amenities are evenly distributed to all sections of the society. No particular section should be given preferential treatment.
4. IMPROVED SOCIAL AMENITIES: Good roads, bridges, pipe borne water, hospitals, better transport services and postal services are very important. When these are provided at affordable rates and their services are efficient, more confidence is built among the citizens. They will proud to be citizens of the country.
5. RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE: People should recognize and respect the religion and beliefs of others citizens.
6. EXISTENCE OF PEACE: There should be no conflict or war. Where misunderstanding or disagreement exist, it should be resolved quickly.
7. ADEQUATE CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION: When this exercise is adequately carried out, national consciousness, integrity and honesty will be built in the citizens.
8. CONTINUATION OF N.Y.S.C PROGRAMMES: The National Youth Service Corps programme which started in 1973, must be re-organized to function better. The programme encourages unity among the youths.
9. INTER-MARRIAGE: This is the process of marrying from another tribe (culture) other than one’s own.
