CHAIN DRIVES
Chain drives refer to the mechanical energy transmission system of transmitting power from one sprocket wheel to the other on greased teeth.

Examples Of Machines Using Chain:

  1. Bicycle
  2. Motorcycle
  3. Chain saw
  4. Chain-tractor
  5. Fork lift

Advantages Of Chain Drive

  1. Chain drive can be used to transmit power for long period of time.
  2. It can be used to transmit power over a long distance.
  3. It can transmit or convey heavy loads.

Disadvantages Of Chain Drive

  1. Chain at times make noise during power transmission.
  2. It is expensive to procure.
  3. It requires lubrication hence high cost of maintenance.

GEAR DRIVE
Gear drive is a mechanical energy transmission system of transmitting power with the use of toothed-edges wheel that mesh with one another.

Gearing: is the arrangement of gears such that power can be transmitted .

TYPES OF GEAR

  1. Internal Gear: This is toothed internally.
  2. External Gear: This is toothed externally
  3. Bevel Gear: This is toothed in a way that it can bring about speed reduction and transmit speed at 90°.

USES OF GEAR

  1. Gear is used for transmitting power.
  2. Gear can be used to change speed ( i.e. either to increase or decrease the speed)
  3. Gear can be used to change the direction of travel i.e. transmitting of speed at 90° with the use of bevel gear.
    4/ Back movement with the selection of reverse gear.
