MECHANICAL ENERGY TRANSMISSION

MOTION IN AUTOMOBILES

The motion in automobiles(e.g. motor cars) is otherwise referred to as transmission.

There are four stages of transmission called the transmission systems:

  1. The engine system
  2. The clutch system
  3. The gear box system
  4. The differential gear system i.e. rear or back axle

The Engine System

The engine system comprises crankshaft, connecting rod and piston. The piston reciprocates (i.e. linear motion) as a result of the rotational speed-force from the crankshaft

The Clutch System

The clutch is a device that is used to engage and disengage or connect and disconnect two revolving shafts or gears.

The Gear Box System

The gears are toothed wheels designed for varieties of speed(i.e. motion) selection in an automobile. Gears are also used to transmit power either to achieve motion reduction or motion enlargement.

The Differential Gear System

This is the unit whereby bevel gears are used to transmit motion at right angle(90°) to the two rear (back) tyres. Motion is transmitted from the gear box to the differential gears through the propeller shaft.
