MOTION

Definition Of Motion

Motion can be defined as the movement of mechanical components in engineering systems.

Types Of Motion
Motion in engineering systems can be classified into two:

  1. Linear Motion
  2. Rotary Motion

Linear Motion
Linear motion is a type of motion that occurs in form of straight line.

Forms Of Linear Motion

  1. One-way linear motion: this type is established in bicycle or motor cycles as it can only have forward movement and no back movement when put into operation.
  2. Reciprocating to-and-fro linear motion: this type of motion is established in the pedal of sewing machine, piston of an automobile engined, screw jack, etc.

Rotary Motion
Rotary motion is a type of motion that occurs in circular form either clockwise or anticlockwise direction.

Forms Of Rotary Motion

  1. One-way rotary motion: This is a rotary motion that moves in clockwise direction only. Such is found in seconds-hand of watches and clocks, pulley of grinding machines, ceiling fans, etc.
  2. Reversible rotary motion: This is when the machine can rotate in both clockwise direction anticlockwise directions. Such is found in drilling machine handle and its bit as may be needed, tyres of motor vehicles can move forward and backwards when the reverse gear is selected.
