POWER TRANSMISSION DEVICES:- BELT DRIVES
This involves the arrangement and connection of Belts and Pulleys. The arrangement is used to transmit motion between two distant shafts where slip is not important.
Belt: this is a flexible material used as a source of motion to transmit power by linking two or more rotating shafts or pulleys.

Pulleys: These are wheels on which belts are fixed for transmission of motion. They are made from metals.

Types of Belt Drive
There are two types of these in pulley system. They are;
Open Belt Drive: This is used to rotate the driven pulley in the same direction of the driving pulley.

Cross Belt Drive: This is used to rotate the driven pulley in the opposite direction of the driving pulley.

APPLICATIONS OF BELT DRIVE
These include;
It is used to connect the peddler and machine wheel for sewing operation.
It is used to connect the electric motor and the grinder pulleys together in a pepper grinding machine.
It is used to connect alternator, water pump and crankshaft together.
It is used to connect pulleys and the motor in cassette and video tape player.
It is used to set the timing of engine by connecting the camshaft and crankshaft of an engine together.
It is used to connect compressors and motors in Refrigerator and Air-conditioner.
ADVANTAGES OF BELT DRIVE
It requires no lubrication.
It is used to transmit motion over long distance.
It is cheaper for power transmission.
It increases machine lifespan because it runs smoothly with little noise.
It has a very high efficiency.
DISADVANTAGES OF BELT DRIVE
It losses energy due to friction.
It gets worn-out and breaks easily due to heat from friction.
