BENEFITS OF DEMOCRACY AND DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

According to Abraham Lincoln, Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people.

BENEFITS OF DEMOCRACY

  1. It ensures equal opportunities for all citizens.
  2. It discourages misuse of power: Under democratic settings, powers are  not concentrated in the hands of an individual. This help in preventing the tendency to use power to oppress the citizens.
  3. It gives opportunity for free choice of leaders.
  4. It allows the existence of the rule of law.
  5. It encourages tolerance.
  6. It encourages political stability.
  7. It gives legitimacy to elected people.

DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

ELECTORAL  COMMISSION.

An electoral commission has the responsibility of conducting and supervising elections in Nigeria e .g, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

FUNCTIONS OF INEC.

  1. It  educates the electorates about electoral system.
  2. It registers political parties.
  3. It reviews voters register before election.
  4. It divides the country into constituencies.
  5. It supplies electoral materials e .g ballot boxes, ballot papers etc.
